Diagnosis/Management of Pain at Infusion Site
Possible Causes*
  • The cannula is too long
  • Thin subcutaneous tissue
  • Poor insertion technique
  • Dislodged cannula
Pain
Considerations and Management

Pain at insertion of cannula +/- bruising but no other skin changes

    Consider:

  • Changing site
  • Using smaller (shorter) cannula/changing to area with deeper fatty tissue

  • Ongoing pain – +/- bruising but no other skin changes

    Consider:

  • Better securement of cannula or tubing
  • Changing site and monitoring old site for redness, swelling, increasing pain (may have dislodged cannula/early infection)

  • Associated with other skin changes – redness, swelling, but no fever

    Consider:
  • Monitoring after site change

  • Associated with fever +/- ANY skin changes

    Consider:

  • Starting antibiotics and schedule a visit check
